Police arrest wife, 22, for stabbing her husband in self-defence

Police have arrested a housewife, Zainab Isa, 22, for allegedly killing her husband, Ibrahim Yahaya, 25, during a domestic dispute in Abbari Ward, Damaturu, in Yobe.
The state Police Command expressed regret over the murder, highlighting the tragic consequences of an abusive marriage.
Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO) Dungus Abdulkarim, a Deputy Superintendent of Police, said the killing occurred on June 26 around 9am and that a neighbour reported the violent argument and scuffle between the couple at the Damaturu Divisional Police Headquarters at about 10am.
Isa reportedly used a knife to stab her husband in the chest, and he died from the injury received before a police rescue team arrived the scene.
She was taken to the state Criminal Investigation Department (CID) for investigation and later arraigned before a court.
Police said Isa confessed she did not intend to kill her husband but stabbed him in self-defence when he beat and kicked her while she was still recovering from a recent medical operation from childbirth.
She recounted their marriage had been marred by violence from the outset, often when she requested food or money, and continued even after the birth of their first child, and the second, even as Yahaya could not provide for the family.
State Commissioner of Police Garba Ahmed implored couples to report domestic abuse to the authorities or file a complaint with the nearest Sharia or family court for redress.
The command also urged community members to address marital issues with a socio-economic perspective to prevent minor crisis from escalating into bigger ones, such as homicide.
