Osun Election: Davido appeals to Trump over fears of violence, intimidation
Nigerian music star David Adeleke, popularly known as Davido, has appealed to United States President Donald Trump to pay close attention to the forthcoming Osun State governorship election, amid concerns over possible violence and disruption of the electoral process.
In a post on his X handle on Tuesday, Davido raised alarm over growing political tension ahead of the poll, warning of the possibility of violence, intimidation, and interference with the democratic process.
“President Donald Trump, I am calling your attention to the situation in Osun State, Nigeria, as we approach the election,” Davido wrote, tagging Trump’s official handle, @realDonaldTrump.
He said Osun residents deserve to exercise their constitutional right to vote freely and peacefully, without fear, and called on the United States and the international community to encourage relevant authorities to protect voters and ensure votes are respected.
“We do not want bloodshed. We do not want intimidation. We want peace, transparency, and a free and fair election,” he added.
The Osun governorship election is scheduled for Saturday, August 15, 2026, with the incumbent governor and Davido’s uncle, Ademola Adeleke, seeking re-election. Davido had earlier warned he would personally reach out to Trump and, if necessary, protest at the White House if the electoral process were compromised.
The singer has also been vocal about alleged interference in the race, previously calling on Imo State Governor Hope Uzodimma who is the chairman of the APC’s national campaign council for the election to stay out of the Osun contest.
