The Ogun State Government said it would start taking beggars from the streets of Abeokuta,the state capital and others to keep them in the sheds built for them by the government .
The government also said it has concluded plans to penalise erring industries, churches and mosques on improper waste discharge, gaseous emission and noise pollution.
The state Commissioner for Environment, Bolaji Oyeleye, disclosed these while speaking with newsmen, in Abeokuta to commemorate 2016 Environmental Day .
He added that efforts were underway to introduce Polluter-Pay-Principle which is expected to levy industries on indiscriminate discharge of waste and other pollution to the environment.
According to him,”I personally, have been involved in an operation where beggars were taken away from Sango and Ado Odo-Ota area and taken to the shed being built for them by the State government around Lafenwa area of the state.
“Although we might not be able to eradicate them entirely but we’ll do that to the barest minimum.
“Our people should be wary of the way they pack their waste in order not to block the drainages especially during the raining season.
“We will also make sure to increase a level of campaign to curtail noise pollution from mosques and churches on Sunday.
“Noise pollution, industrial pollution will be taken very serious especially our churches and mosques which are fond of fixing their speakers outside at night should take note. I know we are going into the Ramadan season and also our churches too organise vigils. Anyone who notices noise pollution, industrial pollution should quickly feed us back and we would take immediate actions.”
