Oba of Lagos makes case for improved welfare of security personnel
Oba of Lagos, His Royal Majesty Riliwanu Akiolu, has called on the Federal Government to provide adequate logistics and improved welfare packages for security and regulatory agencies, to enable them discharge their statutory responsibilities effectively, particularly in the fight against crime, drug trafficking, and the circulation of substandard drugs.
Oba Akiolu made the appeal when he received the leadership of the Police Officers’ Wives Association (POWA), led by the wife of the Inspector General of Police, Dr. Elizabeth Egbetokun, at his Iga Idunganran Palace in Lagos.
Describing security as a shared responsibility, the monarch emphasized the need for community involvement through timely intelligence sharing.
“The task of securing our society is collective,” Oba Akiolu said. “All Nigerians must embrace community policing through the strategy of ‘see something, say something’ to support crime prevention at the grassroots.”
Commending the POWA leadership for the successful hosting of its recently concluded three-day National Conference in Lagos, the Oba charged members of the association to continue playing a supportive role in their families and communities.
He also advised the officers’ wives to promote financial prudence within their households, especially in preparation for post-retirement life.
“Help your husbands and families save for the rainy days, especially after retirement from active service,” he advised.
The monarch further urged the women to serve as moral compasses for their children in the absence of their spouses who are often away on official duty.
“Teach your children good morals and the fear of God,” Oba Akiolu added.
Turning to national development, the first-class monarch encouraged citizens across all strata to contribute meaningfully to the progress of the country, saying: “Everyone must play their part, no matter their status.”
In her remarks, the POWA National President, Dr. Elizabeth Egbetokun expressed appreciation to the Oba for his unwavering support toward the success of their conference in Lagos.
“We are here to pay homage and to express our gratitude for Your Majesty’s support,” Dr. Egbetokun said.
She noted that the National Conference served as a critical platform for members to exchange ideas and explore new ways they can complement the efforts of their husbands in securing lives and property across Nigeria.
“It was an opportunity for us to brainstorm on how we, as wives, can better support our husbands in their crucial task of ensuring national security,” she added.
The visit is part of ongoing engagements by the POWA leadership to promote unity, welfare, and civic participation among police families and the wider community.
