West Ham manager Nuno Espírito Santo has slammed the inconsistency of decisions made by Premier League referees after his team were denied a last-gasp equaliser against Arsenal.

He made his feelings known during his post-match press briefing, demanding that league officials clarify the rules regarding set-pieces.

On Sunday afternoon, Leandro Trossard’s 84th-minute strike condemned the Hammers to a 1-0 defeat at the London Stadium.

It could have been a different story had West Ham snatched the point they appeared to have secured in stoppage time.

Substitute Callum Wilson thought he had equalised after hammering home a strike during additional time, but the goal was chalked off after an agonisingly lengthy VAR review.

Pablo Fornals was deemed to have fouled David Raya by placing an arm across the goalkeeper. It was chaos in the six-yard box, with players falling over amid the wrestling for position.

The VAR process took more than four minutes and involved referee Chris Kavanagh watching replays 17 times at the pitchside monitor.

While analysing the encounter, Nuno expressed his frustration at the cancellation of the goal, insisting that the Premier League management owes West Ham an explanation as to how it reached that decision.

He further noted that since such goals are awarded on some occasions and disallowed on others, it leaves managers confused.

He said: “They have to solve it. They have to come to the clubs and explain and show why sometimes it is, and sometimes it’s not. Sometimes it’s a goal, sometimes it is not a goal.

“Everybody feels confused. Today we are upset; we are sad.”

Following the loss, West Ham now trail 17th-placed Tottenham Hotspur by a point, though Spurs have a game in hand.
