NIN enrolees grow to 95.07m, three Southern states in the top five

Enrolment for the National Identification Number (NIN) rose to 95.07 million by 22 January, according to the latest data provided by the National Identity Management Commission (NIMC).
Some 1.04 million enrolments have been added in January 2023 to top up 94.03 million in December 2022.
Lagos has the highest number of enrolments with 10,5 million captured on NIN data, followed by Kano with 8.3 million.
National Bureau of Statistics (NBS) figures show the two most populous states have led NIN enrolment since the beginning of the exercise.

Backstory
Nairamentrics reports Nigeria had for years struggled to create a credible national database through NIN without success.
However, with the new policy introduced in December 2020 mandating all mobile subscribers to link their SIM with NIN, many Nigerians are being forced to enrol.
To address the infrastructure limitations of the NIMC, which had slowed the process for years, several companies, including telecommunications operators, were licensed as enrolment agents.
Abuja in 2021 directed telecom operators to bar outgoing calls from telephone lines not linked, affecting about 75 million lines.
Many affected subscribers were forced to go for NIN enrolment and link their lines before they got their numbers restored.
