Nigeria’s ‘one-day Vice President,’ Joy Ogah, advocates strongly for girls’ rights amid netizen debate
By Habiba Kaita
The Vice President of Nigeria, Kashim Shettima, briefly handed over his seat at the Presidential Villa to a teenager by the name of Joy Ogah on October 21 2025, to promote girls’ education and leadership. The event aimed to encourage mentorship and inspire young girls across the country.
Ogah used the platform to speak strongly about giving Nigerian girls equal access to education and opportunities. She urged leaders and communities to support girls more through empowerment programs. Her message quickly spread on social media.
Many praised the idea and others doubted if it would lead to real change. On X (formerly Twitter), reactions were divided.

User @7reggie questioned, “Does this president or vice president for a day actually yield any change?”
Another user, @Oyoro4, added, “What is the benefit of this to Nigerians and the country?”
Others, however, saw the event as an inspiring move.
@Trustt_X wrote, “That’s such a beautiful initiative. Giving young people a taste of leadership — that’s how you inspire the next generation!”
Yet, some remained unconvinced.
@Jephatfitness commented, “Nice gesture, but let’s be honest — one day in that seat won’t change a system that’s been ignoring girls for decades.”
Although different opinions have been circulating, Ogah’s short but symbolic time as Vice President has brought back discussions about the need to empower girls and make sure actions like this lead to real, lasting change.
