Nigerians want DSTV to abolish monthly billing, adopt pay per view

Nigerians have taken to the social media to protest the billing system of the pay television operator, DSTV, asking for the alternative pay per view model.

The argument for the pay per view, according to the proponent of the idea, is because of Nigeria’s poor electricity supply which disrupts viewing time.

The argument is further strengthened by the increase in the subscription packages which DSTV started implementing from June 1.

The chatter on the social media about DSTV has made it a top trend on Nigerian Twitter feed.

@Moris_Monye said: “Nigerians in their usual suffer head are saying DSTV is the cheapest in Africa blah blah. Go through the comments to see them.  The point of the tweet is not cheap or not. The point is PAY PER VIEW!  I am barely at home but continue subscribing anyways. Bill me for what I used,” he said.

@maximumsinmotion added: “Is it the days you watched or hours? Sometime in January, I paid for premium over N15, 000 and after three days, had to travel to National Archive Enugu from there to University of Uyo. I spent 28 days unto research. 28 days away plus the 3 days I watched. My connection was severed a day before I returned.”

He added: “We know we are poor, but digitally charge Nigerians per second. Give them the freedom to save their television airtime just by turning it off.  There system of billing is same as assumption. Credit you for 30 days, watch or not, after 29 days you are disconnected regardless of how many.”

The House of Representatives said it is investigating DSTV over its high tariffs and monopolised bouquets.

The House members accuse DSTV of cheating Nigerians by refusing to introduce pay-per-view system of billing.

The green chamber has inaugurated an ad hoc committee to investigate  the company.
