Quham Babatunde, a 34-year-old Nigerian asylum seeker, was fatally stabbed in a violent attack near Dublin’s main shopping area, sparking heightened concerns over knife crime in the city.

The incident occurred in the early hours of February 15 on South Anne Street, shortly after Mr. Babatunde had attended an Afroswing music event at a nightclub. Emergency responders treated him at the scene for multiple stab wounds, including a critical injury to the heart, according to The Irish Independent.

He was transported to St James’s Hospital, where doctors worked to save his life, but he was pronounced dead shortly after arrival.

Another man was also injured during the altercation and was treated for non-life-threatening injuries, including a suspected fractured cheekbone.

Authorities have launched a murder investigation and have arrested two suspects, who are currently being questioned by police.

Mr. Babatunde was living in the International Protection Accommodation Service (IPAS) centre in Ballyogan, south Dublin, as reported by RTÉ, Ireland’s national broadcaster.

Disturbing video footage circulating on social media shows a masked individual wielding a large knife during a street brawl near Grafton Street, a popular shopping destination. The footage appears to show Mr. Babatunde being surrounded and attacked, followed by scenes of paramedics attending to him on the ground.

The attackers fled before emergency services arrived.

The area, known for its lively bars and restaurants, was crowded with pedestrians at the time of the attack. Gardaí believe both the victim and the suspects had attended the same Afroswing event and are investigating whether the stabbing followed a confrontation between two groups after the event at Twenty Two Dublin nightclub.

The scene was sealed off for forensic examination as part of the ongoing investigation.

In a message to residents of the Ballyogan IPAS centre, management expressed their condolences, noting that Mr. Babatunde had been among the first to be housed at the facility.

“In response to this tragic event, support has been made available for both residents and staff during this difficult time. Our deepest sympathies are with his friends, family, and everyone who knew him in Ballyogan,” the statement read.

Former asylum seeker and activist Lucky Khambule told The Irish Mirror that the Ballyogan community was in shock following Mr. Babatunde’s death, with friends remembering him as a joyful person known for his constant smile.

Ireland’s Minister for Justice, Jim O’Callaghan, condemned the attack, calling it “disgusting and unacceptable,” and assured the public that those responsible would be brought to justice.
