Netizens react as Davido, wife, offer support to Nigerian chess master, Tunde Onakoya

Nigerians have taken to social media to hail ace Afrobeats singer, David Adeleke, aka Davido after he and his wife arrived at the Times Square, New York, United States to support Nigerian chess master, Tunde Onakoya, who is attempting to break a Guinness World Record.

Onakoya drew the attention of many Nigerians following his resolve to surpass the record for the longest chess-playing streak by playing for 58 hours without losing.

The 29-year-old chess master on Wednesday, April 17, announced the commencement of the marathon via his X account with the caption, “Game time.”

He tweeted, “We haven’t even started yet and Nigerians are already trooping into camp out with me.”

Shortly that, prominent Nigerians including politicians and celebrities rallied round him, while Davido took a step further to pay him a visit at the venue of the chess marathon.

In a clip that made the rounds after his visit, the DMW boss, his wife, Chioma, and some other 30BG crew members were seen as they arrived.

A group of Nigerians, who could not hide their excitement at having the superstar in their midst later began to drum and sing, as Onakoya got up to hug the ‘Electricity’ crooner.

After the video of Davido at Times Square found its way to the Internet, it sparked a series of heartwarming reactions as netizens trooped to the comment section of the post to praise him. 

An internet user identified as @official_littleman wrote: “001 no be guyname Obo for a reason❤️.”

Another Nigerian, @Thistolulope said: “See how Davido is comfortably walking around there, and those people sef were coordinated. Did slap fly around? Learn to respect yourself in this Nigeria.”

@Georgezaki100k said: “001 is all about fun, support and love❤️”

While @olisa3loka wrote: “That guy that came close to Davido shouting OBO is lucky because if the location were to be naija, Lati for wear am 500 for em left ear em get luck say na New York.”

@modee_belle, however, added: “Is the noise not too distracting?”
