Roma boss, Jose Mourinho, has thrown shade at his former club, Chelsea, after the west London club paid £88.5million for Ukrainian winger, Mykhailo Mudryk.

Chelsea hijacked the deal from their arch-rivals, Arsenal, who had thought they would bring the 22-year-old to Emirates, after the Blues struck a deal with Shakhtar Donetsk to pay £62m upfront and a further £26.5m in add-ons.

Chelsea, who are currently 10th on the Premier League table and 19 points behind league leaders, Arsenal, have now spent about £400m under new co-owner Todd Boehly.

Mourinho, who used Marash Kumbulla as cover for the suspended Roger Ibanez during their 2-0 win over Fiorentina reacted to the Mudryk deal after the match.

The ex-Porto boss subtly aimed a dig at Chelsea, saying he did what he did during the match because his club didn’t have money to throw around like the PL club.

He said: “We need to find a solution, we can’t just buy Mudryk for €100m!”

“I worked at clubs with those sorts of practically limitless funds. There are more and more clubs nowadays that fit that profile, but it’s not our profile. We work, we give our all, we work with the characteristics we’ve got.”

Mourinho managed Chelsea across two spells, working under former owner Roman Abramovich, who was quick to pay huge transfer fees for players and sacked him twice when he failed to get results.

He also managed two Premier League sides, Manchester United and Tottenham Hotspur after leaving Stamford Bridge. The Portuguese tactician prior to these, had a stint in Spain with La Liga giants Real Madrid.
