Manchester United defender Lisandro Martínez has come to the defence of his manager, Michael Carrick, after the Red Devils suffered a 2-0 UEFA Champions League (UCL) defeat against Atlético Madrid at the Riyadh Air Metropolitano.

Reacting to the outcome of the European encounter while speaking with Amazon Prime, the Argentine launched a stinging verbal attack on Manchester United’s hierarchy instead.

Man United suffered their third defeat in five games against Diego Simeone’s team in Madrid as pressure starts growing on Carrick, who has won just one of his last seven matches.

However, while analysing the encounter, Martínez refused to blame his manager, instead singling out director of football Jason Wilcox of the Premier League outfit.

According to him, despite spending just £150 million on new signings this summer, United have failed to strengthen the squad sufficiently during the transfer window.

He further argued that the scrutiny ought to fall on Carrick’s bosses rather than the manager or players for failing to invest adequately.

Speaking on the team’s performance while addressing journalists, Martínez said it was: “Really poor. Really poor.”

He added: “I have to control myself a lot, but sometimes it is a reflection of the mirror of how our club is at the moment.”

Also accusing the Manchester United hierarchy of failing to prepare the squad properly for this season, he noted: “We had a fantastic season last season and now we expect more from the top, more players to compete because many teams bring many players as well.

”Atlético have an amazing team and they deserved to win today.

”But I expect more [investment]. 100%. I expect more from our technical director [Jason Wilcox]. I have to be honest, as players we have to do more, but it is also important when you make a strong squad to be ready for this kind of night.”

When asked about the pressure on Carrick, Martínez directly pointed to those upstairs at Old Trafford in terms of who should be facing questions.

”You can’t keep changing, changing, changing the manager,” Martínez said. “What about other areas? [Looks up] I can’t say more.

”Tonight it is easy to say the coach, easy to say the players, but also we have to see other areas [points up].

”He [Carrick] does his best. Every season is different. You can’t stay with what you did last season.

”The team knows how you play, they know every detail; if you don’t change, next season is a big problem.

”Last season we did everything, we created the base to build an amazing team.

”It is annoying, disappointing coming here and I am not seeing my team trying to get an amazing result.”

Man United’s next game is a Premier League fixture against Leeds United at Elland Road on Sunday, 18 October.
