Man United have been knocked out of this season’s Carabao Cup after losing 3-0 to Newcastle at Old Trafford on Wednesday night.

The Magpies opened the scoring in the 28th minute when Miguel Almiron, who replaced injured Matt Targett struck to make it 1-0 to the visitors.

They then doubled their advantage before the break, after Lewis Hall volleyed in his first goal for Newcastle.

The Red Devils attempted to bounce back in the second half with the introductions of Sofyan Amrabat and Aaron Wan-Bissaka but it was the away side who delivered a hammer blow on the hour, making it 3-0 with a goal from Joe Willock.

Newcastle went on to avenge their last year’s defeat in the final of the cup in the hands of Man United with a rare win at Old Trafford.

Ten Hag’s men have now lost five of their last eight games but will be happy that Hannibal Mejbri escaped a red card.

Boos rang around Old Trafford at the break and at full time as the Dutch manager looked on after another bruising home defeat.

In an earlier game on the night, West Ham beat London rivals, Arsenal 3-1 to make it through to the next round of the Carabao Cup.

The Hammers were winless against Arsenal since January 2019 but found themselves ahead after 16 minutes when Ben White headed into his own net from a corner.

Arsenal spurned chances through Eddie Nketiah and Kai Havertz in the first half and were made to pay after the break when Mohammed Kudus extended the lead after a break with a wonderful first touch and finish.

Jared Bowen then got in on the act with a deflected 20-yard shot on the hour to put the tie well beyond the below-par Gunners, who netted a consolation through substitute Martin Odegaard deep into stoppage time.

Mikel Arteta will now hope for a huge improvement in Saturday’s Premier League clash at Newcastle.
