The Lagos State chapter of the All Progressives Congress (APC) has fired back at former Kaduna State Governor, Nasir El-Rufai, after he urged Nigerians to vote President Bola Tinubu out in 2027 if they want to avoid his plot to stay in power for life.

The party rejected the claim on Monday via a statement issued by the Publicity Secretary of the Lagos chapter, Mogaji Seye Oladejo.

TheNiche had earlier reported that El-Rufai advised Nigerian electorates to reject Tinubu’s re-election bid if they do not want him to emulate Cameroon President, Paul Biya.

Speaking while receiving former Vice President, Atiku Abubakar, who paid him a solidarity visit in Kaduna State following an attack on him by sponsored thugs, the African Democratic Congress (ADC) chieftain noted that Nigeria is facing a major evil ahead of the 2027 presidential election.

He said, “This government is trying to centralize everything instead of devolving powers to the lower levels but the some total of this is that we are facing an evil of a large proportion in the history of this country that if we don’t come together to end this Tinubu administration in 2027, Tinubu will try to be our Paul Biya, he would be president for life, all the signs are there, this is how Paul Biya started.”

Reacting, Oladejo described El-Rufai’s allegation as mischievous, reckless, and an affront to Tinubu’s lifelong commitment to democratic principles.

He recalled the president’s notable role in Nigeria’s pro-democracy movement during the 1990s, particularly his active involvement in the National Democratic Coalition (NADECO).

He added that even at great risk, he opposed military dictatorship and fought for the restoration of civilian rule.

He went on to say it was both “laughable and shameful” for anyone, especially El-Rufai, to question Tinubu’s democratic credentials, given his long-standing resistance to tenure elongation and his defence of constitutional order.

The Lagos APC stressed that Tinubu’s loyalty to Nigeria’s Constitution remains unwavering, adding that the nation’s democracy is safeguarded by constitutional term limits, robust institutions, and an established system of checks and balances.
