Kasarachi with deep machete cuts all over her body

Following the gruesome attack on Mrs. Kasarachi Nwogu by her husband, Mr. Alex Nwogu, on Saturday, April 6, 2024, indigenes of Umugaa kindred, Umunagbor village, Amagbor autonomous community in Ihitte, Ezinihitte Mbaise local government area of Imo, have disassociated themselves from the suspect.

TheNiche had exclusively reported last Saturday how Alex took the menace of domestic violence a notch higher, viciously attacking Kasarachi, his wife, who was already fast asleep, inflicting near-fatal machete cuts on her that resulted in serious bodily injury. The cuts were so deep that one of her hands was almost severed.

While Kasarachi is battling for her life at the Federal Medical Centre (FMC), Owerri, Alex is cooling his heels with the police at the State Police Criminal Investigation Department (CID), Owerri where he reported himself and was promptly detained.

TheNiche report said the attack took place at Umugaa Umunagbor, Amagbor autonomous community.

But indigenes of Umugaa on Thursday said Alex Nwogu is not their kinsman. Rather, they said he hails from a neighbouring kindred, Umuegbeluri kindred of Ezike-na-Logho, Umunagbor.

While admitting that the two kindreds – Umugaa and Umuegbeluri – are all in Umunagbor, indigenes of Umugaa said they are different and not one and the same.

They also contend that the clarification was necessary so as not to suffer collateral damage now or in the future because of the horrendous actions of Alex Nwogu, considering the “emotional trauma of excruciating proportions that the people of Umugaa all over the world have been subjected to since a section of the media was misinformed to believe that Alex Nwogu hails from Umugaa.”

In a statement titled, “RE- Kasarachi: Butchered by husband in the dead of night,” and signed by Mr. Chinonso Anyanwu and Mr. Charles Ajaegbu, chairman and secretary respectively, for Umugaa Kindred, Amagbor Ihitte, they stated: “We unequivocally declare for the records and for the safety of our people now and in the future, that the man accused of perpetrating this reprehensible, barbaric act, Alex Nwogu, is not from Umugaa.”

The statement reads in full:

We refer to the above story on the gruesome machete attack on a hapless woman, Mrs Kasarachi Nwogu, by her husband at Amagbor Ihitte, Ezinihitte Mbaise, as was published by The Niche of April 13, 2024, and wish to state as follows:

1.  That while we commend the professionalism demonstrated by the reporter in balancing the story, we unequivocally declare for the records and for the safety of our people now and in the future, that the man accused of perpetrating this reprehensible, barbaric act, Alex Nwogu, is not from Umugaa.

2.  That the said Alex Nwogu, rather unfortunately, is from the neighbouring Umuegbeluri kindred of Ezike-na-Logho, Umunagbor. Your reporter must have been misinformed by his source, given the proximity of our two kindreds.

3.  That while our innocent Umugaa kindred has painfully been trending in traditional and digital media alike for all the wrong reasons, following this odious incident, Alex Nwogu’s kindred has been spared the opprobrium, completely insulated from the growing public angst and indignation occasioned by his heinous act of unmitigated primitivism.

4. That while we acknowledge – as your report rightly affirmed – that what Mr Alex Nwogu did does not in any way reflect the values, ethos and mores of his immediate family, kindred and Umunagbor at large, linking Umugaa to his senseless action has presented us in bad lights in the eyes of our neighbours who do not know the truth.

5. That although your report exonerated Alex Nwogu’s immediate family and kindred from his habitual acts of barbarism, raw emotions, rather than reason appear to have influenced the reactions of many within our immediate troubled community and neighbouring towns over the incident, with the result that linking our kindred with it carries far-reaching negative implications, far more than we can touch on here.

Thank God, Kasarachi is alive, otherwise who knows what would have become of our quiet peaceful kindred and our elderly parents at home by now – given the groundswell of strong feelings triggered by this sad incident?

6. That this clarification has become necessary in the face of unending deluge of aspersions and vituperative vulgar abuses coming from all directions, with the attendant emotional trauma of excruciating proportions that the people of Umugaa all over the world have been subjected to since a section of the media was misinformed to believe that Alex Nwogu hails from Umugaa.

7.  That we appreciate the good work you are doing and trust that you will publish these few observations in your well-respected newspaper, and give it as much prominence as the previous report.

Please accept the assurances of highest regards
