Ireti Doyle insists on keeping ex-husband’s name despite divorce

Ace Nollywood actress and TV host, Ireti Doyle, has said she will not be dropping her ex-husband’s last name even though they are no longer husband and wife. 

The thespian who was married to veteran actor and broadcaster, Patrick Doyle, in a recent interview with media personality, Chude Jideonwo, confirmed she has left her marriage.

“We are officially divorced,” she said

Shortly after she opened up on the matter, she began to trend on social media and a curious fan on Twitter asked why she still uses the name “‘Doyle” after her divorce from her ex-husband. 

The tweep wrote: “Please y still putting the name Doyle?”

Responding to the netizen, she argued that the name ‘Ireti Doyle’ took her close to 30 years to build and she will not be dropping it soon. 

“Ireti Doyle” is a name that is nearly 30 years in the making. It’s my mine.” she replied.

The thespian’s explanation of why she still bears her ex-husband’s last name soon trended on social media and got more netizens talking.

A tweep, oluwakemi._o wrote: “She can’t drop that name is her trade mark.” 

Another netizen, thekanyinsola said: “It is her name. Probably had it longer than her maiden name. But even if she didn’t. It’s still her name..” 

Toiyoabasi1 added: “You can legally keep your ex husband’s name after a divorce and nobody can make you take it off. The moment they married you they have given you the name for life to do as you want. Senator Florence Ita-Giwa Divórced Dele Giwa and he even remarried before his demise but she’s still using the Giwa. It’s legal. It’s your name for life IF YOU WANT. He can’t even get a court to take that away.” 

Another internet user Dayoogedengbe tweeted: “Lawyers in the house, can you educate us, is it legally right for a divorced lady to still keep her ex husband’s name? Are there implications or not for keeping the name? Asking for knowledge sake.” 

While nnenna_blinks_ said: “I see the same reason with Kevin Hart ex wife. She said because she built with him, she is never dropping his name. But my question is what if you remarry, do you still maintain that decision.”
