I’m not on the run, Atiku’s son-in-law rejects EFCC’s claim

By Jeffrey Agbo

Bashir Abdullahi Haske, businessman and son-in-law to former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, has refuted allegations by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) that he is absconding after being declared wanted in connection with alleged multi-million-dollar money laundering.

The EFCC, in a notice issued last Thursday, declared Haske wanted over alleged conspiracy and money laundering offences. The development is tied to claims involving contracts linked to the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPCL), with funds reportedly traced to accounts associated with him.

In a statement from his media office on Tuesday, Haske described the agency’s action as a politically motivated witch-hunt, stressing that he has been transparent about his dealings.

He said that contrary to the EFCC’s narrative, he had honoured their summons, appeared before investigators, and presented both oral testimony and documents to validate the legitimacy of his financial transactions.

Haske further alleged that despite his cooperation, the EFCC denied him administrative bail even after fulfilling strict conditions, detaining him unlawfully until his health deteriorated. According to him, his release only came after his worsening condition raised fears for his survival, and he is now receiving medical treatment.

“It is therefore shocking and disingenuous for EFCC to now claim I am ‘running away’ when they are well aware that my health crisis was precipitated by their own misconduct,” he stated.

Emphasising that he has no political ambition, Haske said it was unfair and unlawful to link him to political controversies because of his marital ties.

He further accused the EFCC of attempting to exploit Interpol for political purposes, noting that the international organisation has consistently distanced itself from politically influenced cases.

Reaffirming his commitment to due process, Haske said: “I am not on the run. I am committed to clearing my name and cooperating with lawful investigations. All I ask is that EFCC conducts its duties within the ambit of the rule of law and without political interference.”
