Ihedioha’s uncommon garlands: A tribute at 61
By Austin Uganwa
It’s a new dawn for former Governor of Imo State, Rt. Hon. Emeka Ihedioha, who turned 61 on Tuesday, March 24, 2026. To his numerous associates, supporters and admirers, this auspicious commemoration re-echoes his decades of political journey, inimitable contributions to nation building and pro-people pursuits and services
Unlike many politicians of this era, Ihedioha’s birthday commemoration is manifestly anchored on accomplishments, legacies and results. This underscores the reason why his army of supporters and associates celebrate this milestone each year with pomp and unreserved fulfilment.
At 61, Ihedioha resonates an ever-expanding political support base. Years after stepping aside from elective political office, resulting from the Supreme Court’s dubious decision on January 14, 2020, his huge political structure has remained intact, dynamic and forward looking
At 61, Ihedioha has demonstrated to be a purposeful and visionary political leader who understands the feelings, concerns and aspirations of his people. His sincere commitment to the welfare and happiness of the people during his stints in governance accounts for his never-ending political relevance.
For 12 unbroken years, 2003 to 2015, Ihedioha rode on popular mandate into the House of Representatives, representing Aboh Mbaise and Ngor Okpala Federal Constituency of Imo State. He set unmatchable record in legislative governance, constituency outreach, openness and meeting the basic needs of the people.
He made provision of infrastructural projects, social services, empowerments and unbroken chain of constituency briefings the mechanics of his representation. Some of his greatest infrastructure-based legacies included the reconstruction and rehabilitation of the Owerri-Elele and Okpala-Okehi Roads and commencement of the dredging of Imo River, among others.
Apart from his meritorious and episodic rise in the House, occupying the positions of Chief Whip, Deputy Speaker and Speaker, he constituted one of the House’s notable thinkers.
Consequently, he headed the Policy Group that designed the 7th House Legislative Agenda and chaired the 2011 and 2015 Constitution Review Committee. Based on his obsessions for citizen-centric Constitution review process, he broadened citizens and civil societies’ participation, inputs and access and delivered in an accountable manner.
Ihedioha’s colossal performance as a legislator aptly earned him the overwhelming mandate of Ndimo during the 2019 governorship polls.
Within the seven months he governed Imo, he changed the governance landscape of the state with his innovative and populist leadership style. He took decision making process back to the grassroots and released to the local governments their full allocations for them to manage.
Accountability, transparency and due process were made the state norm and culture through the introduction of Treasury Single Account, standardization of procurement law and revitalization of ease of doing business. These measures attracted unprecedented national and international awards and investments to Imo during his era.
Workers salaries were increased and made regular and pensioners entitlements delayed for more than five years were regularized through biometric screening and restoration of prompt payment.
Contractors were mobilized to reconstruct and rehabilitate 25 inter-city and intra-city roads, among several other development initiatives pursued to grapple with the gross infrastructural decay in the state.
At 61, Ihedioha has pitched tent with the opposition African Democratic Congress (ADC). His political track record, influence and dynamism have impacted the party’s intensification in the state.
At 61, Ihedioha boasts of enormous political footprints etched in accountability, public trust and ever growing popular support and mandate.
