I might not even be alive to contest 2027 election – Obi

Presidential candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) for the 2027 elections, Peter Obi, has expressed concerns about his personal safety, saying there is a possibility he may not be alive to participate in the poll.

Obi made the remarks during a recent interview on With Chude, hosted by media personality Chude Jideonwo.

Responding to a question on whether Nigerians should expect to see him on the ballot in 2027, Obi said, “Not even a candidate. I might not even be alive. I’m telling you. Every single thing I do for a living, this government is frustrating it. Deliberately so. Everything. So, there is even a possibility, if they have the opportunity, I will not be alive.”

Although he stopped short of making a direct allegation against the government, Obi maintained that his business interests and everyday activities have been deliberately obstructed.

He claimed those behind the alleged actions rarely confront him openly but operate in ways that make their influence apparent.

The former governor of Anambra State further alleged that the treatment he has received reflects a wider campaign against opposition figures across the country.

“They are attacking everybody who is in opposition personally,” he stated, adding that he has also been denied privileges and entitlements ordinarily available to him.

As an example, Obi recounted an incident at an airport where he alleged officials locked his vehicle while leaving other parked vehicles untouched.

According to him, after identifying himself to the officer in charge, his concerns were ignored.

“But I said, ‘Look at the cars of other people.’ And you could see them talking to each other, as if, ‘Who is this one?’” he said.

Obi also claimed that some of his associates now avoid being publicly linked with him because of fears of possible repercussions.

He disclosed that a number of supporters have privately asked him not to attend important family events.

“I have people send me invitations and say, ‘My son, my daughter is wedding, but please don’t come,’” he said.
