British pundit and former Liverpool midfielder Steven Gerrard has suggested that Arne Slot should drop Cody Gakpo from his starting XI, following the Reds’ 2-1 defeat at the hands of Wolves in the Premier League on Tuesday night.

The Liverpool legend offered the advice on Tuesday evening while analysing the match on TNT Sports.

Slot’s men dominated the encounter, but it was Wolves who opened the scoring in the 78th minute through substitute Rodrigo Gomes.

Mohamed Salah looked to have rescued a point for Slot’s side after equalising, but in added time, Andre’s strike took a deflection off Joe Gomez to send Molineux wild.

Although Gakpo started on Liverpool’s left flank, Gerrard believes Rio Ngumoha, who came on as a substitute against Wolves, should now replace the Netherlands international in Slot’s starting line-up going forward.

He also expressed his displeasure regarding the overall quality of Gakpo’s performance during the game.

“He [Slot] has to start Ngumoha now. He has to start him because he is coming on and doing more in a short cameo than Gakpo is doing in 65 or 70 minutes,” Gerrard said.

“He deserves to start now. He’s got to start the kid on Friday night [in the FA Cup].”

The result means Liverpool remain in 5th position in the Premier League table, facing the possibility of dropping to 6th if Chelsea beat Villa on Wednesday.

Meanwhile, Liverpool will be hoping to exact revenge when they face Wolves once again in the FA Cup fourth round this Friday.
