Former INEC boss Attahiru Jega loses wife

Late Hadiza Jega was widely respected for her support of education and community development initiatives, particularly across Northern Nigeria.

Hajiya Hadiza Jega, wife of Professor Attahiru Jega—the former Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) and ex-Vice Chancellor of Bayero University Kano (BUK)—has passed away.

Her death was confirmed on Sunday, April 5, 2026, via a statement issued by her family.

“Inna lillahi wa inna ilaihi raji’un. With total submission to the will of Allah, we announce the passing of the wife of our former Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Attahiru Jega, OFR,” the statement read.

The family added that the Janaiza (funeral) prayer will take place following the Zuhr prayer at 1:30 p.m. at the National Mosque in Abuja.

The family statement also offered prayers for her soul to be granted Aljannah Firdausi and called on friends, associates, and well-wishers to remember them in their prayers during this period of mourning.

Bayero University Kano also confirmed her demise and commiserated with her husband Prof. Jega.

In a post shared on its official social media page, the institution wrote: “With total submission to the will of Allah, we announce the passing of Hajiya Hadiza Attahiru Jega. May Allah grant her Aljannatul Firdaus and forgive her shortcomings. May He also grant the family the strength and patience to bear this loss. Ameen.”
