FENRAD praises Gov Otti for Omenuko Bridge construction, calls for reconstruction of Abam–Ohafia Road

The Foundation for Environmental Rights Advocacy & Development (FENRAD) Nigeria, an environmental and public accountability organisation, has commended the Governor of Abia State, Alex Otti, for the successful construction and commissioning of the Omenuko Bridge in Abam, Ohafia.
A statement on Monday signed by the executive director of FENRAD, Comrade Nelson Nwafor, said the completion of this vital infrastructure marks a significant milestone for the people of Abam and neighbouring communities.
“For decades, residents endured mobility challenges, seasonal flooding, and economic isolation due to the absence of a reliable bridge. The Omenuko Bridge now stands as a symbol of responsive governance and a strategic intervention that enhances transportation, stimulates local commerce, improves access to healthcare and education, and promotes broader socio-economic integration within the region.
“FENRAD recognizes the Governor’s demonstrated commitment to infrastructural renewal and rural development across Abia State. Strategic public investments such as this not only improve living standards but also strengthen environmental resilience in riverine and flood-prone communities,” the group said.

While celebrating this laudable achievement, FENRAD called for the urgent reconstruction and rehabilitation of the Abam–Ohafia Federal Road, stating that the current deplorable state of the road continues to undermine economic activities, impede safe movement, and diminish the full benefits of the newly constructed Omenuko Bridge.
“The Abam–Ohafia Federal Road is a critical artery for agricultural distribution, trade, and inter-community connectivity. Its reconstruction is therefore essential to unlocking sustainable development, reducing transportation costs, and ensuring that the gains from recent infrastructural interventions are not compromised.
“FENRAD urges the appropriate federal authorities, in collaboration with the Abia State Government, to prioritize this road as a matter of public interest and socio-economic necessity.
“As a leading environmental and public accountability watchdog in Abia State, FENRAD remains committed to promoting transparency, fiscal responsibility, environmental sustainability, and good governance. The organization continues to monitor public projects, advocate for due process in contract awards and execution, and demand proactive disclosure of infrastructure spending to strengthen public trust and democratic accountability.
“FENRAD reiterates its dedication to constructive civic engagement and evidence-based advocacy, ensuring that development projects across Abia State align with principles of sustainability, equity, and accountability,” the foundation said.
