Former Ekiti State governor, Ayodele Fayose, has argued that his decision to support President Bola Tinubu, despite belonging to an opposition party, does not constitute anti-party activity.
He made the claim while speaking at the Peoples Democratic Party’s (PDP) national convention in Abuja on Sunday.
While addressing participants, Fayose noted that political differences are a normal feature of democracy, adding that national interest should be placed above party loyalty.
He said: “Nigeria is for all of us; you are an Ekiti man first before you become a political party card bearer. All the former governors are behind the current governor.”

He went on to defend his decision to back the incumbent president—a member of the All Progressives Congress (APC)—instead of presidential aspirants from his own party, the PDP, by citing examples from other nations.
“Obama is not supporting the Democrats; the former president is not supporting Trump. Have they expelled them? No. Democracy will always have those differences on national issues,” he stated.
The former governor further argued that political endorsements should be based on competence rather than mere party affiliation.
“We must not say that because someone is our party member, they must win, even when we know our party member lacks capacity. Would you compare a Makinde with an Asiwaju?” Fayose queried.
