Ex-gov Theodore Orji resigns from PDP

Former Abia State Governor, Senator Theodore Orji, has announced his departure from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), bringing an end to his long association with the party.
His resignation was conveyed in a letter addressed to the PDP Chairman of his Umuahia Ward 1 and released to journalists on Saturday.
Orji, who represented Abia Central in the 8th and 9th Senate, first became governor in 2007 under the Progressive Peoples Alliance (PPA). He defected to the PDP in 2011 following a prolonged political dispute with his predecessor, Chief Orji Uzor Kalu.
After completing his second term as governor on the PDP platform, Orji proceeded to the Senate in 2015, where he served two terms under the same party.

During the wave of defections that struck the PDP in 2024, his son, former Speaker of the Abia State House of Assembly, Rt. Hon. Chinedum Orji, moved to the All Progressives Congress (APC). His wife had also left the PDP earlier.
In his resignation letter, the former governor wrote: “I write to formally tender my resignation from membership of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) effective immediately.
“This decision has been taken after a wide consultations with family and associates.
“I appreciate the opportunities and experiences gained during my time as a member of the party.
“Please accept this letter as a formal notice of my withdrawal from the party.”
