Police say they are investigating a video circulating online in which a female student at Bamidele Olumilua University of Education, Science and Technology, Ikere (BOUESTI) in Ekiti is seen flogging a fellow female student with a stick.
The school has issued a statement announcing it has suspended the bully and another lady who supplied her with an additional stick, as well as other students who witnessed the incident without intervening.
The footage shows the assailant ignoring the victim’s pleas while wielding the stick, similar to the video in April of how a female student of Lead British International School in Abuja repeatedly slapped another female student, which sparked a public outcry against bullying in schools.
The victim in the Abuja school did not fight back, just as the one in BOUESTI also declined to retaliate, only making efforts to ward off the attack.
Some witnesses to the latest incident on April 5 identified the victim as Ajayi Precious Gloria and the bully as a “very popular” mass communication student.
The motive for the attack is unclear and the video shows some bystanders do not bother to intervene.
The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) has demanded a public inquiry into school bullying following these incidents.
