Ekiti killings: Adebayo condemns attacks on worshippers
By Henry Nnaemeka
Former presidential candidate of the Social Democratic Party (SDP), Prince Adewole Adebayo, has condemned the recent killings and kidnappings of worshippers in Ekiti State, warning that the spate of violence reflects a disturbing decline in the value placed on human life in Nigeria.
In a statement posted on his verified X handle, Adebayo expressed concern over the attacks, stressing that no citizen should have to live in fear while practising their faith. His reaction comes amid rising public outrage over insecurity, particularly attacks on religious gatherings and rural communities.
He described the recurring incidents as evidence of governance failure, accusing authorities of offering excuses rather than ensuring protection. According to him, the foremost responsibility of government, the protection of lives and property, is being neglected.
Adebayo also criticised what he termed the politicisation of security institutions, arguing that it has weakened their effectiveness. He said that, if elected president, he would insulate security agencies from political interference, while strengthening professionalism, independence and internal accountability.
He warned that deploying security forces for political purposes undermines their ability to tackle genuine threats, and called for reforms that would prioritise discipline within the ranks and refocus institutions on serving the public interest.
“The Nigerian state must be rebuilt around the protection of its people,” he said, adding that restoring public confidence would require structural reforms and transparent leadership.
The SDP chieftain extended condolences to victims and their families, reiterating his call for “competent and accountable leadership” that prioritises citizens’ safety and dignity.
His comments add to growing calls for urgent reforms in Nigeria’s security architecture as concerns over safety of lives and property continue to mount nationwide.
