Eid-el-Kabir: Niger gov cancels durbar over Mokwa flood victims

By Jeffrey Agbo

Governor Umar Bago of Niger State has directed that this year’s Eid-el-Kabir celebrations be observed quietly across the state, in honour of the victims of the recent flood disaster in Mokwa Local Government Area.

The flood, which struck on May 29, 2025, is considered one of the most devastating in the state’s history. It claimed over 200 lives, impacted 503 households and displaced more than 3,000 people. Significant infrastructure was also destroyed, including three major bridges, severely hampering rescue and relief efforts.

In a statement released by the Secretary to the State Government, Abubakar Usman, Governor Bago instructed all emirates in the state to scale down celebrations. Traditional Eid activities such as Hawan Bariki, the Durbar and other public festivities have been suspended.

“This decision was taken as a mark of respect for the victims of the tragic flood in Mokwa. It is also intended to allow a period of mourning, prayer, and sober reflection across the state,” the statement said.

The governor extended his condolences to affected families and communities, encouraging residents to use the occasion to pray for the departed and support those in need through charitable acts.

The Durbar, a key cultural feature of Eid-el-Kabir that usually includes prayers and vibrant parades led by traditional rulers on horseback, has been canceled this year. Its suspension reflects the government’s focus on humanitarian needs over ceremonial observances.

Governor Bago also reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to aiding victims, rebuilding infrastructure and putting in place long-term strategies to mitigate future flood risks.

He urged the people of Niger State to stand in solidarity with the Mokwa community and to approach this year’s Eid with compassion, unity and a sense of shared responsibility.
