Babcock University expels student over alleged ritual practices, drug offences

Babcock University in Ilishan-Remo, Ogun State, has expelled a student, Oladipupo Siwajuola, for what it described as “gross violations” of university regulations, including alleged involvement in fetish practices, drug peddling, impersonation and dishonesty.

Siwajuola gained public attention in early May 2025 when his mother took to social media, accusing the university of negligence after he was reported missing.

However, in an official statement released on Wednesday by the institution’s Director of Marketing and Communication, Dr. Joshua Suleiman, the university refuted the allegation, stating that Siwajuola intentionally left campus on April 28, 2025, without permission. According to the statement, he disguised himself in a hoodie and exited through the teaching hospital gate.

The university noted that Siwajuola was returned to campus by his father on May 15, 2025. He was subsequently questioned by the Security Services Department and submitted a voluntary written statement, later confirmed during a disciplinary hearing.

According to the university, Siwajuola admitted to purchasing a black soap “from a traditional herbalist for N100,000, which contradicted his mother’s earlier claim that she had given it to him to treat a skin condition.”

“Siwajuola, admitted that the soap was intended for ritual purposes, as part of a ‘Yahoo Yahoo Plus’ scheme, a slang term for internet fraud mixed with fetish practices.

“He revealed that he was engaging in fetish practices in an attempt to get rich quick.

“He also confessed to drug peddling, borrowing N500,000 from an online loan app to fund gambling, and impersonating another student to open a bank account,” the statement said.

The university further clarified the circumstances of his discovery, stating that it was not his former schoolmates who found him—as claimed by his mother—but rather the mother of a friend he was staying with in Lagos. She notified his family after seeing the social media coverage of his disappearance.

The university said that following an internal investigation it found Siwajuola guilty of multiple infractions, including unauthorised campus exit, use of fetish materials, drug peddling, impersonation and dishonesty.

Citing adherence to its disciplinary code and global best practices, the university announced Siwajuola’s immediate expulsion.

“While we recognise the emotional weight of this decision, especially for the family involved, our foremost responsibility remains the safety and moral integrity of all students entrusted to our care,” the varsity said.

It also criticised the public allegations made by Siwajuola’s mother, calling them “sensational and baseless.” While dismissing the claims as false and misleading, the university said it would not “pursue a libel case at this time” out of respect for the cooperation shown by the student’s father.
