West Africa Road Transport Union (WARTU) has assured that it would review transport agreement between Nigeria and other member-countries to enable Nigerian transporters participate in transportation of Nigeria cargo along ECOWAS corridor.
WARTU also inaugurated its Nigerian chapter executive that will pilot the affairs of the union for one year.
President of the sub-region transport group, Mr. Aloga Ogbogo, said that WARTU would monitor import and export of Nigeria goods on international corridor in accordance with bilateral agreement between member states; urging the new executive to identify the sources of movement of cargoes from Nigeria to other member-states and from other member-countries to Nigeria.
He charged the members to harmonise the transport tariff from Nigeria to other parts of ECOWAS and Central Africa.
He words: “Nigeria executive will review transport agreement between Nigeria and other member-countries to enable Nigerian transporters participate in transportation of Nigeria cargo along ECOWAS corridor, among other things.
“For cargoes going to the landlock countries like Mali, Burkina Faso and Niger Republic, from port to their destination, the landlock countries have 2|3 and coastal countries have 1|3 of the cargoes, while coastal region is 50|50.” Meanwhile, the inauguration, which took place at the Nigerian Shippers’ Council (NSC) on Tuesday, saw 14 persons emerge through nominations of two members from each member-association as executive and ex officio.
However, the 14 nominees were selected from the Nigerian Association of Road Transport Owners (NARTO), Association of Luxurious Bus Owners of Nigeria (ALBON), Association of Maritime Truck Owners (AMATO), and National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW).
Others are; Association of Nigerian Licensed Customs Agents (ANLCA), Dangote Group and the National Association of Government Approved Freight Forwarders (NAGAFF).
