A lawyer, Eburu Ekwe Barth, has been jailed for two years for questioning the ruling of a Magistrate, Ibrahim Mohammed, of Magistrate Court 2, Wuse Zone 6, Abuja.
According to a law website, BarristerNG.cm, the Magistrate ordered the policemen at the court to arrest and handcuff the lawyer who challenged the Magistrate on some of the words he attributed to him.
The website said the lawyer was thereafter handcuffed and led out of the courtroom despite pleadings from other lawyers.
According to BarristerNG.com, a lawyer present during the dramatic court proceeding said the crime of the lawyer was that he interjected when the magistrate was delivering a ruling on an application by the opposing lawyer.
The lawyer’s ground of interjection, the website said, was that the magistrate was ascribing what he never said to him in his ruling. The lawyer further queried whether there was a conspiracy between the magistrate and the plaintiff’s lawyer.
The website said the interjection angered the magistrate who immediately ordered the policemen around to arrest the lawyer whom he summarily sentenced to two months imprisonment for contempt.
The lawyer was taken to Suleja Prison.
