Dele Momodu has defected from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to the African Democratic Congress (ADC), the new bride of Nigerian politics now gaining momentum that attracted to its column this past week John Oyegun and Ireti Kingibe.

Oyegun, former All Progressives Congress (APC) National Chairman, joined the ADC last week after which he disclosed he was among those who brokered the deal behind the scenes for the party to agree to be adopted by the opposition coalition.

Kingibe, currently engaged in a gallant public fight with Nyesom Wike over his alleged corrupt ways, this week defected to the ADC from the Labour Party (LP), the platform on which she won the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) senatorial seat in 2023 after many years of unsuccessful attempts in other parties.

Momodu, veteran journalist and publisher, cited the hijacking of the PDP by antidemocratic forces for prompting him to jump ship.

He explained in a letter dated July 17 and addressed to PDP Ward 4 Chairman in Ihievbe, Owan East Council of Edo, that his departure was with immediate effect.

“My reason is simple and straightforward,” the letter said.

“Our party has been unarguably hijacked by antidemocratic forces, from within and outside, in broad daylight. It is therefore honorable to abandon the carcass of the party to them while the majority of us earnestly sign up with the new coalition party known as the African Democratic Congress (ADC).”

Momodu once ran for the presidential ticket of the PDP, a detail that may be inferred  from his resignation letter which expressed gratitude to the party leadership at the ward level for their consistent support over the years.

His defection to the ADC marks a significant shift in Edo political landscape, and adds momentum to the realignments for the 2027 general election, aimed principally to remove Bola Tinubu from his shoddy job in the presidency.

Momodu joined the PDP in 2021 where he actively participated in national debates and party activities. His exit follows a wave of resignations by other prominent figures in the party disillusioned with its internal dynamics.
