Customs FOU Zone B makes N1b seizures, arrests 14 suspects in Q1

    Federal Operations Unit Zone B of Nigeria Customs Service has made a total of 623 seizures amounting to total duty paid value of N1,050,500 between January and June 2019.

    Controller of the unit, Mohammed Sarkin-Kebbi disclosed to newsmen on Wednesday in Kaduna that the value for 2019 seizures almost doubles that of 2018 which was N504,112,150.

    He attributed the increase in his unit’s anti-smuggling to improved strategies and morale boosting by the Controller General of Customs, Col. Hameed Ali.

    Sarkin-Kebbi also told journalists that 14 suspects were arrested in connection with the seizures while two have been successfully prosecuted.

    The Controller who disclosed that smugglers are also planting spies around his operatives added that his men will always be on top of their game using intelligence and legitimate enforcement machinery.

    He gave a breakdown of the figures to include 1,550 packs of tramadol, 153 vehicles, 8,618 bags of rice, 820 cartons of spaghetti, 333 units of used tyres, 1,035 jerrycans of vegetable oil, 167 bags of sugar and 147 bales of used clothing.

    The command, according to him, has also foiled attempts by smugglers to pack foreign used bags of locally grown rice to deceive unsuspecting consume.
