This year marks the 250 th anniversary of one of the world’s most prestigious tertiary institutions – Brown University. As part of the festivities, the Ivy League citadel will host the fifth Chinua Achebe Colloquium on Africa.
The conference will take place May 1, 2, and 3, 2014. This year the Colloquium will focus on African Literature as Restoration: Chinua Achebe as Teacher.
Attending this unprecedented gathering is a constellation of political, cultural and intellectual superstars from every corner of the globe. Panelists from the United States, Great Britain, South Africa, Finland, Sweden, India, Mexico, Brazil, Italy, Nigeria, Ghana, Spain, Canada and Ireland will present papers.
Other special guests will include leading figures in the political, cultural – musical, dance and fine Arts sectors – from around the world. Founded by the late Nigerian novelist Chinua Achebe, the David and Marianna Fisher University Professor emeritus at Brown University, the Achebe Colloquium annually brings together an international group of scholars, officials from African governments, the United Nations, North America, the European Union, and other organizations for several days of intense deliberation and exchange of ideas on the importance of Art, Literature and Culture; and the need to strengthen democracy and peace on the African continent.
The conference will be of interest to the general public, Art lovers, literature enthusiasts, teachers of literature, students of literature – both college and high school – cultural aficionados, high school students, book clubs, cultural groups and organizations; and the curious and open-minded.
