At 50, Ali Baba is worth celebrating

There are some people who would simply see Ali Baba as what he is, a comedian, if he gives them his real name. He was born Atunyota Alleluya Akporobomerere, but prefers to make it easier for his fans by shortening it to Ali Baba.

Although comedians have always been around, but Ali Baba came armed with a Religious Studies & Philosophy degree from Bendel State University now known as the Ambrose Alli University, Ekpoma, to revolutionalise the industry.

In the past 22 years as a professional stand-up comedian, he has supported, mentored and presented several comedians, helping to ensure that standards are maintained and professionalism encouraged.

He even incorporated a company, Alibaba Hicuppuray 3rd, with the focus to ensure that the perception of comedians being never-do-wells changed, and is instead seen as a profession and a respected way of life.

According to MC Abbey, “People now see us as professionals; we are not drop-outs or people who are idling away. It is now seen as a business, our passion and profession, and so people see us in that light. We will always be grateful to Ali Baba, who saw the vision and continued and helped train a lot of us.”

The motivational speaker and writer was also described by Bovi as someone who never shies away from encouraging people.

“Many of the classic jokes that are evergreen in the minds of average Nigerians are Ali Baba’s creations. Some have been retold in a shameless manner by less-creative forces and audiences still laugh. Some have been refurbished and improved upon. But the source of these materials are still Ali Baba,” he said.
