Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta has now lost back-to-back pre-season friendlies following the Gunners’ 2-3 defeat to Bundesliga side Borussia Dortmund in the Emirates Cup.

Prior to the commencement of the encounter played at the Emirates Stadium, new Arsenal signing Bruno Guimarães was introduced to fans, but he was not included in the matchday squad.

Dortmund made a quick start and opened the scoring as early as the seventh minute through Samuele Inacio, who slotted home after latching onto a through-ball from Felix Nmecha.

Despite controlling the game and dominating possession and goal attempts after conceding, Arsenal saw the visitors double their advantage 22 minutes later, when Konstantinos Karetsas found the net after converting a pass from Daniel Svensson.

Arsenal reduced the deficit to 2-1 in the 53rd minute when Christos Tzolis dribbled into the box and found substitute Ethan Nwaneri, who buried his effort.

However, Dortmund restored their two-goal cushion three minutes later after the ball dropped to Joane Gadou, who chested it down before beating Illan Meslier—who had replaced Kepa Arrizabalaga in the Arsenal goal.

Viktor Gyökeres scored a penalty in the 69th minute after Tzolis was brought down in the box, raising hopes of a possible comeback, but Dortmund held on to win 3-2 and claim the Emirates Cup.

Arsenal, who began their pre-season friendlies with a convincing 4-1 victory over Girona, lost their second match 3-1 to another Spanish club, Real Betis, on Wednesday, 5 August.

Arteta’s side now have one more friendly against Italian side Como on 12 August before taking on Manchester City in the season’s curtain-raiser, the FA Community Shield, on 15 August.
