Arsenal defeated Brighton 1-0 at the American Express Stadium on Wednesday night to extend their lead at the top of the Premier League table to seven points.

Although the home team were the better side for long periods, it was the Gunners who scored the only goal of the encounter through Bukayo Saka.

The deflected strike eventually proved to be decisive, especially after struggling Nottingham Forest held second-placed Manchester City to a 2-2 draw at the Etihad.

Arsenal’s night almost began in catastrophic fashion in the opening seconds when goalkeeper David Raya sent a clearance straight to Carlos Baleba; however, the midfielder’s attempted chip was weak, allowing Gabriel to retreat and head the ball off the line.

In the end, Brighton ran out of steam as Arsenal closed out another very scrappy, but hugely significant, win.

After the victory, Mikel Arteta’s men will now shift their attention to the FA Cup fifth round against Mansfield Town on Saturday.
