Arsenal mourn death of former goalkeeper Alex Manninger

Arsenal have expressed their profound sadness following the recent death of their former goalkeeper, Alex Manninger.

The club’s emotional tribute to the former Austrian international was shared via their official X (formerly Twitter) account.

Manninger passed away on Thursday, 16 April 2026, at the age of just 48, following a fatal car accident.

The late shot-stopper represented the Gunners between 1997 and 2002 before moving to Espanyol.

Over the course of a distinguished professional career, he also played for Juventus, Liverpool, Bologna, Torino, Red Bull Salzburg, Udinese, and Augsburg.

Reacting to the news, Arsenal described the incident as “shocking” and “tragic”.

The Premier League leaders extended their deepest sympathies to his family and friends.

While sharing their devastation, the club wrote: “Everyone at Arsenal is shocked and deeply saddened by the tragic passing of former goalkeeper, Alex Manninger.

“All our thoughts are with his family and loved ones at this incredibly sad time. Rest in peace, Alex.”
