Senegalese-American singer Aliaune Thiam, better known as Akon, has said most artists are not as wealthy as many people assume.

He made this known recently while fielding questions during a candid interview with Hip Hop Eye.

According to Akon, a lot of singers who flaunt flamboyant aesthetics and luxurious lifestyles on social media and in their music videos are only putting up appearances and are not actually rich.

He noted that although artists are famous and are the face of the entertainment industry, they are often the last to get paid in the business chain.

He, however, admitted that while music is a lucrative venture, it is the executives and those at the backend who make more money, not the artists.

Speaking on the show, Akon said, “In the music industry, the artist is the last to get paid. He is the broke one but he is the most famous. If you want to be broke and famous, be the artist.

“But if you want to make real money, go to other sectors of the music business, like the producer, songwriter, manager, agent, and attorney. There are so many areas in the entertainment field that you can really maximise.”
