The Vice Chancellor of Adekunle Ajasin University, Akungba-Akoko (AAUA), Prof. Tomola Obamuyi, has lauded the Ondo State Governor and Visitor to the university, Hon Lucky Orimisan Aiyedatiwa, for what he described as consistent and unprecedented financial interventions aimed at restoring stability to the institution.
Obamuyi, in a statement of appreciation issued on Sunday, said the governor’s timely intervention in the payment of outstanding salaries and implementation of agreements reached between the Federal Government and university unions had rekindled hope among workers and students of the institution.
The Vice Chancellor said the development represented a significant step towards ending the financial challenges that had disrupted academic activities and threatened the stability of the university calendar.
According to him, the governor recently approved more than N1 billion for the payment of outstanding May and June salaries, while further funds had been released to commence implementation of the salary adjustments arising from the agreements between the Federal Government and university unions.
Obamuyi described the intervention as a demonstration of the governor’s commitment to the survival and growth of the state-owned university system, stressing that the development would provide the necessary foundation for restoring confidence among members of staff.
He said the implementation of the agreements would ensure that the Consolidated Academic Tertiary Teaching Allowance (CATTA) and Consolidated Tertiary Teaching Allowance (CONTTA) obligations were addressed, thereby creating an environment conducive to uninterrupted academic activities.
The Vice Chancellor noted that the financial intervention was particularly significant because prolonged uncertainty over salaries and allowances had affected the smooth running of academic programmes in the institution.
With the latest intervention, he said, the university was looking forward to a more stable academic calendar that would enable students to complete their programmes and graduate within the expected period.
Obamuyi said: “The governor last month approved a hefty sum of over one billion Naira to us to pay outstanding May and June salaries.
He has also approved money for us to commence the payment of the salary increment reached between the Federal Government and university unions.”
He added: “That means that the CATTA/CONTTA agreements would henceforth be paid without hassles, and the academic calendar would henceforth be stable to enable our students to graduate as and when due.”
The Vice Chancellor described the governor’s interventions as unprecedented in the history of the university, saying the institution would remain grateful for the support being extended to it at a critical period.
“These consistent and timely financial interventions are unprecedented in the annals of Adekunle Ajasin University and should be commended by all lovers of education in the state and beyond,” he stated.
Obamuyi assured the governor that the university management would reciprocate the support through renewed commitment to teaching, research and community development.
“Adekunle Ajasin University will forever remain grateful for these commendable acts of the Visitor. And as Management, we assure Mr Governor that we remain committed to the vision and mission of the University,” he said.
He therefore added that the university would continue to pursue research capable of making meaningful contributions to society, while ensuring that its graduates were equipped to compete favourably with their peers globally.
