Yesufu, however, advocated the enactment of laws that will make such politicians lose elective positions.

Human rights activist and co-founder of #BringBackOurGirls movement, Aisha Yesufu, has said seamless defection of politicians from one party to another is the bane of Nigeria’s democracy.
She made the assertion on Wednesday in a post she shared on her official X page.
Yesufu was reacting to the decision of the only All Progressives Party (APC) House of Assembly member in Abia State, Anderson Kelechi Akaliro to join the ruling Labour Party (LP).
Addressing the development, she said there is a need to enact laws that would ensure politicians forfeit positions won or benefits gained in the previous party, whenever they decamp to another party.
She added that without such laws, the trend of politicians moving to the ruling party at both state and Federal levels will persist.
Speaking via her verified social media handle, Yesufu wrote: “One of the biggest problems we have in Nigerian politics is this defection from one party to another seamlessly.
”We must have codified laws that expressly state that your right of association is guaranteed and you can defect from one party to another BUT whatever you won has to be left behind!
”Until that is done, we would continue to have this unhealthy situation where everyone wants to move to the ruling party be it at the State or Federal level.”
