Air Peace crew involved in PH Airport runway incident tested positive for alcohol, drugs – NSIB says

NSIB further disclosed that another cabin crew member of the airline also tested positive for cannabis.

The Nigerian Safety Investigation Bureau (NSIB) on Friday disclosed that its preliminary investigation indicated that an Air Peace pilot and co-pilot consumed alcohol before flying. 

This was revealed in a statement made available by NSIB’s Director of Public Affairs and Family Assistance, Mrs. Bimbo Olawumi Oladeji.

An Air Peace aircraft, Boeing 737 veered off the runway at Port Harcourt International Airport on June 13, 2025, without any damage.

However, NSIB launched an  investigation into the cause of the incident by conducting toxicological tests on the flight crew.

Speaking on the outcome of the tests, the bureau confirmed that some of them turned out positive.

It went on to say the tests indicated the presence of alcohol in the system of the crew, while another crew member also tested positive for tetrahydrocannabinol (THC), the active compound found in cannabis, commonly known as ‘Indian hemp’.

The statement read, “Initial toxicological tests conducted on the flight crew revealed positive results for certain substances, including indicators of alcohol consumption. A cabin crew member also tested positive for THC, the psychoactive component in cannabis.

“These results are being reviewed under the human performance and safety management components of the investigation.

“Toxicological screening conducted post-incident revealed that the captain and first officer tested positive for ethyl glucuronide, indicating recent alcohol consumption.”
