After the evening market
By Abraham Nwankwo
Soon the fowls will begin to roost;
The market square is bustling and full.
Then with their shrieking musical notes,
Crickets begin to herald rude darkness;
And in strings, the women are home-bound.
Hampers of wares and purchases crowning their heads.
Sounds of pestle and mortar come from the house:
So the children are already grinding the seeds,
That mother will use to thicken the sauce;
For it’s time for her to cook dinner.
