Mohammad Abacha, son of the late ex-military head of state, General Sani Abacha, has filed a suit before the Federal High Court in Kano, asking the court to declare him the governorship candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Kano for the 2023 polls.

The respondents are the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Sadiq Wali, son of the former minister of foreign affairs, Aminu Wali, PDP and Kano State chairman of PDP Shehu Sagagi.

Abacha also sought an order of mandatory injunction compelling INEC to recognise him as the governorship candidate of PDP for the 2023 election and publish his name as such.

He also asked the court to grant an order of injunction to restrain Wali from parading himself as PDP governorship candidate in Kano.

Abacha, who claimed that INEC had earlier issued a copy of the list of candidates who won the party primary where his name appeared, challenged the sudden omission of his name on a fresh list.

He was declared the winner of the PDP primary conducted in May 2022. Abacha defeated his only rival Jafar Bello.

However, the Wali-led faction of PDP conducted a parallel governorship primary where Sadiq emerged as the winner among eight other contestants.

INEC has, however, told journalists that the commission only monitored the primary conducted by Sagagi-led PDP chairman which produced Abacha as candidate.

The court is yet to fix a date for the hearing.
