Awoniyi netted the hosts’ second goal of the game eight minutes before the break after dispossessing Luke O’Nien and finishing past Robin Roefs.
Reacting after the win, the Nigerian international credited Coventry’s collective performance and explained how the team’s counter-pressing approach created his scoring opportunity.
“I think the most important thing is the three points. I think the team from the outset played well together, the game plan worked,” Awoniyi said.
Frank Lampard’s side have collected nine points from nine matches this season and currently occupy 16th place in the league table.
