…as GMD Alawuba visits Air Chief, extends condolences to bereaved families
United Bank for Africa (UBA) Plc has extended its condolences to the Nigerian Air Force (NAF) and the families of those who lost their lives in the NAF 931 aircraft crash.
UBA’s Group Managing Director/Chief Executive Officer, Oliver Alawuba, paid a visit to the Chief of the Air Staff, Air Marshal Sunday Aneke, at the NAF Headquarters in Abuja where he signed the condolence register.
The aircraft crashed on October 5 while on a routine mission from Benin City, Edo State, to Lagos. Contact with air traffic controllers was lost at about 9.13am before the wreckage was located near the Nigerian Navy’s Forward Operating Base in Igbokoda, headquarters of Ilaje Local Government Area of Ondo State.
The Nigerian Air Force confirmed that all 25 people on board, comprising five crew members and 20 passengers, died in the accident. The loss of all those on board prompted recovery efforts involving the military, the NSIB, the Navy, the Ondo State Government and other responders.
In the days after the crash, the Ondo State Government deployed swamp buggies to assist personnel trying to reach the wreckage. The state Commissioner for Health, Banji Ajaka, said the aircraft had sunk deep into the swamp, making it difficult for conventional vehicles and boats to access the site.
Recovery operations are still ongoing.
