Social media influencer Martins Vincent Otse, popularly known as VeryDarkMan (VDM), has gifted a car to a former neighbour, whom he credited with helping his family during a difficult period of his childhood.
VDM presented the car to the man, popularly known as Uncle Yoruba, in appreciation of the support he and his mother received when the family was struggling financially in Abuja.
In a video shared on his Instagram page, VDM recalled that about 15 years ago, his family lived in a “face-me-I-face-you” compound after moving from Dagba to Baba Kwere in Abuja.
He said the neighbour, who worked as a commercial driver popularly known as a “kabu-kabu” operator, regularly helped his mother with transportation when she was struggling to make ends meet.
According to VDM, the man would take his mother to work in the morning and return her home after completing his own work.
He also recalled how the neighbour supported the family financially whenever they had nothing to eat.
“Every morning this man will take my mom to her workplace. When he closes, he’ll take her back. When we don’t have food to eat, sometimes he’ll say, ‘Take N200, take N100,’” VDM said.
He explained that the money, though small at the time, helped the family buy basic food items.
“We will then use this money to buy dry okro, 20 Naira, and oil, 10 Naira that time. Buy garri and water. Chop that one go sleep,” he recalled.
Reflecting on the support he received during his childhood, VDM said he had made a personal promise to remember the people who stood by his mother while she was struggling to raise her four children.
“I am happy today that I am able to fulfil one of the promises I made to myself, which is when I make money, I will remember everyone that helped my mother when she was struggling with the four of us,” he said.
VDM described the former neighbour as someone who “really helped our family” and said the car was his way of repaying the kindness he received many years ago.
“This man I just gifted this car really helped our family and today he is getting a payback,” he said.
He also used the gesture to encourage people to treat others with kindness, noting that circumstances can change and people who receive help at one point may later be in a position to give back.
“TREAT PEOPLE WELL, you don’t know tomorrow,” VDM wrote in the accompanying message.
