US President Donald Trump has ordered American flags across the United States to fly at half-staff for one week in honour of Dolly Parton, creating an extraordinary posthumous tribute to a cultural icon who twice declined offers of America’s highest civilian honour from his administration.
Parton, the legendary country music singer, songwriter, actress and philanthropist, died on Tuesday at the age of 80, prompting an outpouring of tributes from political leaders, entertainers and fans across the world.
Trump announced the flag order in a statement mourning the singer, describing her as “one of the greatest Country singers” and saying her death was “a true loss for millions of people.”
The President said the flags would be lowered beginning at 6 p.m. Tuesday and remain at half-staff for one week, adding: “There has never been anyone like her, and never will.”
The gesture is particularly striking because Parton had twice turned down offers from Trump’s administration to receive the Presidential Medal of Freedom, the highest civilian honour in the United States.
She explained in 2021 that she could not accept the first offer because her husband was ill and declined the second because she did not want to travel during the COVID-19 pandemic.
Parton’s reluctance to accept the honour was consistent with her desire to avoid being perceived as politically aligned.

Among her numerous hits was “Coat of Many Colours,” a deeply personal song inspired by her humble childhood.
