Carragher also predicted that Arsenal will retain the EPL title they won last season, while Man City will once again finish as runners-up.

British commentator and former Liverpool defender, Jamie Carragher, has said Chelsea will never win the English Premier League (EPL) title with goalkeeper Robert Sanchez in goal.

The Reds legend made this statement while making predictions on Sky Sports as Chelsea defeated Fulham 3–2 on Monday in a league fixture.

Cole Palmer produced a coruscating display at Craven Cottage, laying on Joao Pedro’s opener, which arrived just 31 seconds into the game.

However, Fulham’s teenage midfielder Josh King levelled the scores in the 23rd minute with a fizzing shot that beat visiting goalkeeper Robert Sanchez at his near post.

Chelsea’s record summer signing Morgan Rogers then put the Blues ahead once again in the 41st minute, scoring from a cutback by fellow debutant Maxence Lacroix.

In the second half, Palmer gave the visitors a comfortable two-goal cushion after profiting from a Pedro assist, but Gonzalo Garcia—a summer acquisition from Real Madrid—nodded in from close range to give Alvaro Arbeloa’s side hope of taking a point in an end-to-end affair.

Chelsea, however, stood firm to register their first win in an opening league match since 2022–23, but pundits pointed out that the two goals they conceded were a result of poor goalkeeping by Sanchez.

While analysing the encounter, Carragher insisted that Arsenal will retain the Premier League title they won last season, noting that Xabi Alonso’s side will never win the English top flight with Sanchez in goal.

The former England defender also claimed Manchester City will finish in second place, while Chelsea and Liverpool will complete the top four positions in the Premier League table.

Justifying his position, Carragher said: “I just can’t see Manchester City winning the Premier League this season without Rodri.

“Having said that, Man City are a better team than Chelsea. Not playing in Europe could be a factor and play a huge part for Chelsea and give them a big lift; we have seen that before with other teams.

“But I would just go for Man City right now [to finish second behind Arsenal].

“Chelsea will never win the league with Sanchez in goal. It’s impossible.”
