An old social media post shared by Afrobeats star David Adeleke, better known as Davido, has seemingly come back to haunt him after his public appeal to US President Donald Trump to intervene in the upcoming Osun State gubernatorial election.
Taking to his verified handle on Tuesday, 11 August, the singer posted a detailed statement tagging President Trump and urging him to pay close attention to happenings ahead of the off-cycle election in the state.
He also raised concerns over reported voter intimidation, rising tensions, and threats to the integrity of the democratic process.
Davido wrote: “President Donald Trump, I am calling your attention to the situation in Osun State, Nigeria, as we approach the election.”
The artist added that citizens and residents of the state do not want bloodshed or intimidation, but rather are demanding a peaceful, transparent, and free and fair election.
He further advocated: “We do not want bloodshed. We do not want intimidation. We want peace, transparency, and a free and fair election.”
The call by the ‘Electricity’ hitmaker later drew a mixture of praise and scepticism online in Nigeria. When questioned on why he was involving the American president in a Nigerian election matter, Davido pointed to his dual citizenship as justification, noting that Trump is also his president.
However, moments after his appeal, netizens dug up an old post he had shared about Trump in January 2021, shortly after the US Capitol events on 7 January 2021.
In the now-trending post, which has since attracted tens of thousands of likes and comments, Davido bluntly wrote: “Trump .. u done out here.
Following the emergence of the old post, internet users placed it side by side with his latest request to Trump, highlighting the striking contrast between dismissing the US president and then turning to him for help five years later.
The Osun election, which will take place on Saturday, 15 August, will see the incumbent, Governor Ademola Adeleke, battle thirteen other challengers who are bent on stopping his re-election.
