The United States booked their place in the round of 16 of the World Cup on Thursday after dispatching a lacklustre Bosnia-Herzegovina at the San Francisco Bay Area Stadium.

The tournament co-hosts produced a display brimming with energy and creativity, and more than merited their victory.

Folarin Balogun opened the scoring for Mauricio Pochettino’s side near half-time but was later sent off in the 68th minute.

Having reacted quickest to steer Malik Tillman’s deflected pass past Bosnia goalkeeper Nikola Vasilj, the Monaco forward’s evening was abruptly cut short. He became entangled with Tarik Muharemovic, and his studs raked down the defender’s calf towards his ankle.

Despite going a man down, Tillman doubled his side’s lead eight minutes from time with a sumptuous free-kick to make the points safe.
